Mugsy Creations Origin Story

I blame Harry Potter for all of this!

In a good way:) As Halloween 2022 approached I had a strong and unexpected urge to give kids something special and whimsical. It seemed as if the nearly 2.5 years of chaos had rocked their little worlds and ours to the point where it just felt like they needed something full of light and not heavy, something special and something "MAGICAL." Heck...I felt like we all needed it. My brain immediately locked onto Harry Potter. Somehow, I was going to turn our yard into a Harry Potter Extravaganza!

The igniting of a creative spark!

Armed with an idea, some paint, and 20 years of experience as a mental health counselor (which honestly just pushed me to make this as lighthearted as possible), I got to work. One project led to another. It felt good to be driven by the sheer hope that some child/parent/person or neighbor might experience a few minutes of pure magic. My hope was that they would forget about everything else that weighs them down and just be able to be in that moment. And that is what happened. WE ALL HAD A BLAST! I channeled my best McGonagall in the hopes of helping kids feel how magical they were by being able to light up pumpkins and corral mischievous pixies with the flick of their wand.

The magic lives on!

I did not expect feeling so happy before, during and after the event. Nor did I expect the void I felt on November 1st. Now what? The thought occurred to me, "Why do I need to wait to make magical things until Halloween?" I realized I didn't have to wait! The wonderous era of childhood had captured my heart.

I began making things that I hoped would make the special moments in people's lives even more special. Life is hard. 20 years of being a counselor and being alive has taught me that. So, it seems to me that when these special events in our lives come around, we should savor them, hold onto them tightly and celebrate them fully. Fond memories provide a warm glow through dark times. I am so hoping that Mugsy Creations can add some vibrant color, whimsy and magic to your already special moments. I truly believe that if we try, "Sometimes a moment of magic can last a lifetime." That's where the slogan came from. "Mugsy" is the nickname my grandpa called me when I was little. He was a wonderful carpenter and creative beyond imagine. He was the 1st person I did creative projects with, so the name seemed fitting. I can't wait to see if we can add some magic to your special moment!

Why don't you offer shipping?

Many of the items are of a delicate nature, such as diaper cakes and decorative gift baskets. They require handling similar to a floral arrangement and would not do well in shipping. Also, many of them are of a descent size and would also not be conducive to shipping. Never say never though. It is possible that at some point this could be an option.

Do you have a physical location?

Mugsy Creation items are being sold by ClaytonHaus, a local Mahomet, Illinois gift shop. ClaytonHaus is located at:

Can you make me something identical to a previous item I saw on your site?

I absolutely will do my best to make it look identical. Each item is very individual and truly one of a kind. Sometimes suppliers discontinue certain colors, patterns and blankets or they are out of stock. But I am great at hunting things down. So I will do my best for sure. If for some reason, I cannot locate certain items, I will communicate with you and show you pictures of the item(s) I am considering using instead. My goal would be to keep the same "look" and "vibe" even if I we can't find an exact match.

Why are there price variations in diaper cakes, gift baskets and decor of similar sizes?

The prices of items within the diaper cakes, gift baskets and decor can vary greatly. A blanket in one diaper cake may cost $12 while a blanket in another may cost $25 or $30. Some items have more decorative items than others. For example some diaper cakes or gift baskets may use 2 baby washcloths while others may have 20 or more to get a certain design. Each one is truly unique and therefore costs will vary greatly depending on many factors. I can promise you that I try to keep costs as low as possible and still get the design we are looking for:)i

Do you make toys as well?

All items I make are made for decorative purposes only and are not in the toy category. Although many of them may look like toys, due to the use of tiny parts in these items, they pose choking hazards to children. All items should be placed and hung out of reach of children and should not be placed above cribs where they may pose fall hazards or strangulation hazards. (This goes for all decorative items from any merchant in my opinion.) Decorative items can transform a space and provide wonderful feelings and energy leading to an overall serene, playful and magical environment that children still get to experience without physically touching.

Why do you use size 3 diapers instead of newborn size in your gift baskets and diaper cakes?

Many people like to leave these diaper cakes and gift baskets intact for a while to use as nursery room decor or to just enjoy them for a little while longer. Utilizing size 3 diapers allows the parents to enjoy their gift while not missing out on all of those useful diapers as baby gets older.

Do you have tips for how to disassemble items?

I find that using a seam ripper is extremely helpful for disassembling washcloth creations like flowers, vegetables, animals. Most of these creations are held together with clear hairbands. They can be wrapped rather tightly so the seam ripper is helpful to get underneath the bands and release them without damaging the washcloth.

Tape can simply be peeled off items without permanent damage occurring.

Why is there a $50 downpayment for custom diaper cake orders?

Custom orders are super fun! I love them! They require ordering specific supplies (like blankets and many other goodies) that fit what the specific customer is wanting. Most of the time, I purchase these items myself. If for some reason the customer decides to not go through with the purchase (because...life happens), I would be out of the funds I spent on the supplies and if it is very specific, there may not be another customer who is interested in these items. Basically, it is a way of covering costs.

If by some chance someone places a $50 downpayment and cannot or chooses not to proceed with the purchase, I will refund the money if I have not purchased any specific items for that project. If I have purchased specific items for the project, I will gladly give those purchased items to you up to the 50 dollar value of the downpayment.

I want this to be really special. Any suggestions on how to cater this to the person I want to give this to?

Absolutely! I find there are several things we can look at and it can really help us design something the person or people will love:)

If you are planning a shower, diaper cakes may be the way to go because they can serve both as a decorative focal point and gift. (Can be a group gift also.)
If you are congratulating soon to be parents, celebrating a new arrival, welcoming baby home for the first time or attending a shower, a gift basket or nursery decor items may be just what you need.

Helpful Things to Consider

Are there themes and/or colors the person loves in general (lemons, bees, faith, baseball, golf)?
Do you know the baby's name?
Do they have a gift registry? If so, we can look at it and get an idea of themes, colors and items they want and need. We can incorporate some of these items into the gift if you choose.
Is there a theme and/or specific colors to the shower?
Do you have a baby shower invitation that was sent to you? If so, we can often determine colors/themes that the person likes from looking at the invitation.
Do you know if their nursery has a certain theme/color scheme? (examples: safari animals, dinosaurs, daisies, moon and stars, fairies) (neutrals, pinks, greens).
